Artistic interventions are increasingly being used by palliative care teams in response to growing recognition of their positive impact on the well-being of patients, relatives and professional carers at the end of life. The WHO report (2019) highlights the potential of the 'arts-based health interventions' to improve care, reduce health inequalities, empower patients and carers (Faincourt D., Finn S. What is the evidence on the role of arts in improving health and well-being. A scoping review. WHO 2019). However, the report also highlights the lack of evidence and the methodological weakness of existing studies.

This presentation introduces a research-creation method used in artistic interventions carried out with artists working in palliative care units or home hospitalisation services and the healthcare professionals who lead these initiatives, in partnership with the Mission Culture and Health of XX’s Hospitals, the Museum of Fine Arts during 2 years. Master's degree medical students design, carry out and self-evaluate an artistic intervention on the end of life.

The method of "research creation" or "research based on arts" is based on observation and direct participation in the intervention, followed by self-assessment by those involved in the intervention (patients, relatives, carers, students).

Artistic engagement improves the well-being of those involved by enabling a meaningful experience. People experience that the artistic intervention induces a change in sense of meaning. The sensory/aesthetic experience transforms them and makes them more resilient in the face of the end of life or death.”
